Destinations
East meets West - Hong Kong – The former British Colony of Hong Kong is a cosmopolitan mix of peoples and cultures, where ancient and modern coexist, in fact, where East truly meets West. Referred to as the Manhattan of Asia, Hong Kong has enough to utterly swamp a visitor’s senses. Don’t miss a ride on the world’s steepest funicular railway to the top of Victoria Peak, which is a staggering 552m above sea level. Take in the breathtaking views of the world’s busiest harbour, the South China Sea and, weather permitting, the distant coast of mainland China.
The island is compact so no matter where you stay, you won’t be too far from shopping and the major sites. Best time to go: Sept-Dec and during the 2-week food festival in August (though this is typically the rainy month)
Relax with a Thai Massage - Thailand – To experience Thailand’s oldest form of medicine at its most authentic, head for the Chetuphon Temple, Thailand’s oldest and largest temple and university, where you’ll be stretched, pulled, sat on and walked over for nearly an hour. Once de-jetlagged and de-stressed, a visit to Bangkok’s Chatuchak Weekend Market (every Saturday & Sunday) is in order. You’ll pick up silk garments and hand-painted china for next to nothing at this shopping extravaganza – the dizzying sights, smells and sounds will surely stay with you for a long time.
If all that sounds too much like hard work, head for the stunning and laid back island of Koh Phi Phi (a day trip from Phuket or Krabi) where snorkelling, sunbathing and waiting for simple grilled lunches on the beach are about all there is to do. Best time to go: Oct-Mar; Ko Phi Phi: Jan-May.
